“Riot! Riot! Riot!” sharply pivoted away from the prep school-influenced work of Raf Simons’ past, and in many ways ushered in a new era of his — one defined by political statements, dramatic layering, and a distinct working class skew. The enmeshing of layers which flooded the runway was inspired by teens Simons saw at the Vienna flea market, whom he noted dressed in such a way not to make any specific kind of fashion statement, but simply because of the cold. The references to musicians which had always been intrinsic to his work remained; the runway was rife with callouts to David Bowie, Bauhaus’ Peter Murphy, and the Manic Street Preachers.
Striped turtlenecks were a key factor of the runway presentation. Shown layered and unlayered, they appeared numerous times in a variety of patterns. This block-striped wool version features a slim silhouette with the military color scheme used repeatedly throughout the collection.
